Male sexual dysfunction during love making can be caused by many factors, including physical and psychological ones. Is it also possible that the simple act of putting on a condom may cause stiffness problems?

Not many sources cite condom use as one of the practical reasons for loss of erection during sex. Male sexual dysfunction is defined as the loss of stiffness during sex, which may be due to lack of blood supply going to the male sex organ, loss of libido or performance anxiety. More common in older than younger men, some of the factors that contribute to ED include tension caused by financial and marital problems; and the use of antihypertensive and antidepressant medications. Lifestyle choices such as alcohol and smoking may also cause ED.

Condom use becomes necessary in modern times because of sexually transmitted disease issues and the need for a birth control method that is solely a man’s responsibility. Condoms are cheap, readily available in drugstores or in local grocery stores, and can be conveniently carried inside a bag or in the back pocket.

Some men lose their erection during sex as soon as they put the condom on because of the following reasons:

1. Desensitization – Sex with a condom feels unnatural to some men. Putting it on prior to love making could incite feelings of unease or thoughts of not feeling pleasure during sex.
2. Mood Interruption – A pause in the love making may bring the mood level back to zero, and then the man and his partner will need to start over.

Male sexual dysfunction due to condom use may be prevented by simply modifying one’s perception of safe sex and the purpose of wearing a condom in the first place. Associating condom use with more stamina during sex could do the trick. Partial desensitization because a guy is wearing one could prevent premature ejaculation, making him last longer. Wearing a condom may also mean that the woman can stop worrying about who is in charge of the birth control during sex.
