Viagra, Wound Healing and More Herbal Aphrodisiac Studies

Following its introduction to the pharmaceutical world and mainstream culture, numerous studies have been conducted to determine other uses for the drug Viagra. Curiosity about this drug prompted companies to investigate the overall short term and long term effects of this drug on men users. Here are some of these studies:

- Wound Healing. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to characterize the effects of sildenafil citrate (trademark viagra) on the histopathological variations during the wound healing process (via angiogenesis) in dogs and to compare the vasodilatatory effects of sildenafil citrate, acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside. Results showed that the relative vasorelaxant effects increased from lowest to highest with sildenafil citrate, acetylcholine and sodium nitroprusside, respectively. Results of the study indicate that sildenafil citrate could enhance the healing process by stimulating angiogenesis. (Acta Veterinaria Brno, 2003, Vol. 72, No. 2, pp. 273-277)

- Casimiroa edulis – In laboratory animals, the mating responses and behaviors under sildenafil citrate (Viagra) treatment and administration with Casimiroa edulis seed extract were evaluated. The following traits were tested: mounting frequency, intromission frequency, mounting latency, intromission latency, ejaculatory latency and post-ejaculatory interval. Results suggest that these two substances have the same mode of action.

- Cordyceps sinensis a medicinal product under the traditional Tibetan and Chinese medicine is named “Himalayan Viagra” in the west because of its clinically proven effects on: sexual function; alleviation of amnesia; improvement of chronic bronchitis and asthma; and reduction of cancerous tumour size. (Tropical Resources: Bulletin of the Yale Tropical Resources Institute, 2007, Vol. 26, pp. 63-69)
