ED, Viagra Use in Movies

Since Viagra became the most popular drug for erection disorder treatment, media has not been shy about its perception and mirth at Viagra use and men who have erectile dysfunction. Erection problems can be a pain, and can be seriously damaging to most men, but somehow, seeing the parodies of Viagra use and erection disorders in movies takes the edge off. For a reason, the idea of men gleefully getting hard or using Viagra as a prank tickles a lot of people.

Here are some popular movies that featured Viagra use or erection disorders.

Tom Cats (2001) – Some well meaning fellow placed a few tablets of ground Viagra in a bottle of wine intended for the newly wed’s honeymoon, but the gesture resulted in a few tipsy and utterly embarrassed groomsmen showing huge erections during the wedding ceremony. The funniest scene included the hesitation of the groomsmen to go to the altar, and when they finally did (with their hardened members standing at attention).

What Women Want (2000) – When the main character, Nick (Mel Gibson) found out that he can hear women’s thoughts, he experienced performance anxiety during sex with a sultry barista who has a crush on him. Nick excused himself to go to the bathroom wherein he simultaneously reprimanded his little soldier about the job at hand.

40 Days and 40 Nights (2002) – After a bitter breakup, Matt Sullivan (Josh Hartnett) took on the seemingly impossible dare to go celibate for 40 days and 40 nights. His friends, who betted against his vow, put Viagra in his drink to make the task even more difficult. An older colleague drank the OJ by mistake and was last seen pleasuring himself over a porn magazine in the men’s room.

High Performance Sports and Viagra Use

Viagra has been reported numerous times as a possible enhancement drug for athletes, particularly cyclists who need to be in top shape at high altitudes. Several studies mentioned in an article linked viagra use with optimum performance at high altitudes in animal models (hamsters) and humans (fighter pilots). This led to the conclusion that Viagra alleviates jetlag.

A study of athletic enhancement through Viagra use was mentioned in ScienceDaily.com during June 24, 2006. It stated that cyclists can boost their performance by taking Viagra prior to a run. To quote:
“Ten cyclists who took sildenafil (Viagra) collectively improved their stroke volume (the volume of blood moved out of one ventricle of the heart per beat) and cardiac output (stroke volume times heart rate) compared to the placebo trial. The researcher also found that the Viagra group minimized the decline of arterial oxygen saturation of the arteries when the cyclists were at simulated altitude of 12,700 feet.”

Viagra has long been known to improve blood circulation, and consequently, oxygen delivery to different parts of the body. It causes the relaxation of blood vessels in the lungs. This improves blood flow from the heart and increases oxygen transport to working muscles. With these in mind, these previous reports of increased athletic performance due to sildenafil use may just trigger some speculations about the abuse of this drug during the Beijing Olympics (2008), particularly since it was not listed as a prohibited drug in this Olympics season.

Herbal viagra is the herbal alternative to viagra. It is as effective, without the nasty side effects.

Erectile Dysfunction Drugs: Mechanism of Action

Simply put, Sildenafil citrate Viagra and other drugs showing the same effect on erection disorders (such as Herbal Viagra) expand the blood vessels and improve blood flow from the heart to the penile region. Men frequently buy these drugs to alleviate their relationship problems caused by inability to foster intimacy with their partners.

Viagra also increases oxygen transport via the blood stream to working muscles, particularly under high altitude conditions, where the air contains less oxygen compared to lowlands. Sildenafil works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiestrase-5, which actively degrades cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), the biochemical transport molecule that causes the relaxation of blood vessels. Inhibition of this enzyme promotes high vasodilation and greater blood flow through the arteries.

One study on Viagra mechanism of action involved cyclists, who were then tested for improved performance under high altitude conditions. The hypothesis was that the erectile dysfunction drug would allow the participants to breath in more oxygen at a molecular level, because constriction of blood vessels in the lungs is reduced.

Athletic enhancement
is a debatable issue and until now, no concrete stand has been made on the positive effects of libido enhancers on athletic performance. However, all theories point to the fact that any physical exertion will benefit from the effects of these synthetic and herbal drugs that can cure impotence.
