The Man’s Guide to Contraception
Every man knows how to put a condom on, but when contraception becomes the woman’s concern things become a bit more unclear – just what do the various pills, contraptions and creams do?
Here’s a guide to some of the most popular forms of contraception for women:
The pill: This is the most popular form of contraception in the UK and there are various different types – as it is only available on prescription, women follow their doctor’s advice about which type is best for them.
The coil: Also known as an IUD, the coil is a small copper and plastic implant that’s inserted into the womb and has short threads that hang down through into the vagina, which prevent sperm meeting and fertilising an egg.
The diaphragm: The diaphragm, or cap, is a piece of latex that is coated in spermicidal cream and inserted into the cervix, acting as a barrier to prevent any of your little swimmers making mischief.
The femidom: This, as it name suggests, is a female version of the condom that is bigger and looser and works in the same way, It is inserted into the vagina and can be put in some time before sex, so no more fumbling around in your wallet for a foil packet as you near the crucial moment.
Contraceptive implants: More and more women are opting for this method of contraception, which involves a doctor inserting specially designed implants under the skin, which release hormones that prevent pregnancy directly into the bloodstream.
